Climate Action

September is a special month because the Global Climate Action Summit (GCAS) is coming to San Francisco. To celebrate, we're encouraging all our Earth Day Every Day participants to focus on climate action in September!

We've compiled many community events and other great resources created just for GCAS. If you do any of these activities during September, they're worth extra points!

Youth Speaks: An Evening of Spoken Word and Entertainment

 2 points per person + 1 extra point in Sept! 

This past July, COAL + ICE partnered with Youth Speaks to encourage young artists to write original poetry on the theme of climate change. These poems were performed at the Brave New Voices festival in Houston, and the five winners are traveling to San Francisco to participate in this special evening program.The evening will also include dance and other special guests. Learn more.

Climate Comedy Night

Climate change is no laughing matter, but in the spirit of satire we will attempt to have some fun. Join beloved Bay Area comedian Will Durst and his friends Diane Amos, Nato Green, and Johnny Steele as they share their unique perspectives on climate change in an evening of stand up, improv, and storytelling. Learn more.

Youth Sustainability Summit

SFUSD is hosting a Youth Sustainability Summit created by students for students. The Summit will focus on getting youth involved in the conversation about climate action and equipping them with tools to make change. Open to all middle and high school students, this event will feature speakers and workshops on climate action, waste, pollution, and more. Learn more and RSVP by September 6th.

CA Rise for Climate, Jobs, and Justice

On September 8, thousands will march in San Francisco for the largest climate march the West Coast has ever seen. Students from several high schools have come together have come together to organize a SFUSD section - and they're inviting everyone in the SFUSD community to join them! Learn more and RSVP to march with SFUSD.

An interactive event to learn about the multitude of education and career pathways in energy, environment, and sustainability. This event will include employer and education resource booths, a keynote speaker, and career panel discussions. Learn more and register here.

The Cost of Coal Film Festival

A mini-film festival exploring the devastating impacts of coal development around the globe, filmed by grassroots activists and filmmakers. Following the film screening, there will be a panel discussion and a lively Q&A session with the filmmakers and featured activists. Learn more.

International Coastal Cleanup

Every year during Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup, hundreds of thousands of volunteers comb lakes, rivers and beaches around the world for trash. Learn more and sign up for an event near you.

SF Zoomobile: Climate Change Condundrum

 15 points + 5 extra points in Sept! 

What makes a climate, and why is it suddenly changing? How do animals and habitats react as our climate shifts? Most importantly, what can we do together to slow that change and keep the climate cozy for animals around the world? Lessons will range in complexity and tone accordingly with the grade level. Email Blair at blairb@sfzoo.org with the subject line "Climate Change Condundrum for Global Action Climate Summit" to schedule for either September 10th or 11th.

Environmental and Climate Justice

This 60 minute presentation introduces students to basic concepts and principles of environmental/climate justice (EJ) and reviews the relationship of EJ to broader movement-building work. Part of the presentation will touch on the Climate March on September 8th, where students will be encouraged in attending to show support of Climate Justice. Look Ahead - San Francisco

Look Ahead - San Francisco is a virtual reality sea-level rise smartphone app developed in partnership with the City of San Francisco that enables local residents to visualize the potential impacts of sea-level rise, helps the City to build public awareness of what is at risk, and provides opportunities for community members to actively engage in climate solutions. COAL + ICE Exhibition

 15 points + 5 extra points in Sept! 

The COAL + ICE documentary photography and video exhibition is a unique and accessible multi-disciplinary opportunity for kids to visualize the impacts of climate change and be inspired to take action. In addition to guided tours of the exhibition, depending on the day’s events, students will have the opportunity to engage with photographers, listen to their peers recite climate change-inspired poetry, or discuss climate solutions with youth activists. Participating teachers will be provided with resources to engage their students with the exhibition and empower them to continue the conversation and take action. Learn more.

Inventing Tomorrow (Documentary)

 15 points + 5 extra points in Sept! 

INVENTING TOMORROW follows young scientists from Indonesia, Hawaii, India, and Mexico as they tackle some of the most complex environmental issues facing humanity today. Classes that sign up will receive a screening guide to facilitate conversations with students before and after the film. Special guests will also be present at select screenings. Learn more.
